Pietersen Hails Sharks’ 8-Try Masterclass

Hollywoodbets Sharks coach JP Pietersen praised his side for producing a performance full of intensity, pride, and resilience after their emphatic 46-7 victory over Benetton Rugby, saying the display reflected the character and potential within the squad despite a challenging season.
The Sharks crossed the whitewash eight times in a dominant attacking performance at home, with Jurenzo Julius stealing the spotlight with a sensational hat-trick. Edwill van der Merwe added two tries, while Andre Esterhuizen, Siya Kolisi, and Litelihle Bester also got on the scoresheet.
Although the Sharks failed to make the most of their opportunities from the kicking tee, converting only three of their eight conversion attempts, the result further strengthened their impressive home record. Their last home defeat came in January against the Lions, courtesy of a late try by Haashim Pead.
Speaking after the match, Pietersen said the team had placed a strong emphasis on consistency and preparation throughout the week.
“We asked the team for consistency and performance, and they delivered,” he said.
“They started the game with the right intent and mindset, but it all came from a good week of preparation. Andre [Esterhuizen] led the leadership group really well during the week, and everything came together nicely.”
The Sharks’ attacking play was sharp and expansive throughout the contest, with their dangerous backline constantly troubling Benetton’s defence. Pietersen credited the forwards for laying the platform that allowed the backs to flourish.
“We’ve obviously got exciting backs — Jurenzo, Siyaya, Jaco, Edwill, as well as Makazole Mapimpi and Lillie [Litelihle] Bester coming on,” he explained.
“Andre brings that experience too, but it all starts with the set piece. The pack deserves massive credit. Emile van Heerden led them well alongside Ox Nche and Vincent Koch. The scrum functioned well, and the maul was effective. Manu Tshituka also carried strongly after coming in late for Vincent Tshituka. The forwards laid the platform for the backs to express themselves.”
Defensively, the Sharks displayed a level of cohesion and physicality that has often been missing this season. Pietersen highlighted the side’s commitment in contact and work rate off the ball as key factors behind the victory.
“The physicality stood out,” he said.
“Our first point of contact was strong. We made our one-on-one tackles and competed hard at the breakdown. We stopped them from building momentum. Even when they managed a line break, there was excellent scramble defence, with three or four players chasing back. Benetton had opportunities in the first half, but there was a great fight from Jaco [Williams] and the others to stop them from scoring. The effort across the full 80 minutes was outstanding.”
Despite the Sharks no longer being able to secure a top-eight finish this season, Pietersen said it was important for the team to show pride in the jersey and reward the supporters who have continued backing the side throughout a frustrating campaign.
“We addressed our disappointment about missing out on the top eight and then focused on the final two home games,” he said.
“We wanted to show the crowd, who have supported us all season, that there is still pride and fight within this team. That’s something I’ve asked for since day one. We haven’t always been consistent, but there has always been heart and pride in the jersey, and today showed exactly how much it means.”
Pietersen believes the performance highlighted the resilience within the squad and insisted the current standings do not accurately reflect the work being done behind the scenes.
“The table doesn’t do justice to what this group has been working towards,” he said.
“The players deserve credit for showing up every Monday, even during difficult periods when results weren’t going our way. The mindset has remained positive and focused on improving every week.
“Sometimes you need to lose before you truly understand how to win consistently. I believe we’re building towards that, and next season could be very exciting for this group.”
The Sharks now turn their attention to their final match of the season, when they host Zebre Parma next Saturday.
