“I Failed” — Freese

Magesi FC coach Allan Freese has admitted that he failed to achieve the primary objective set for him after the club was relegated from the Betway Premiership.

Magesi’s fate was sealed after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Milford FC in their final Premier Soccer League promotion/relegation playoff match at Seshego Stadium on Saturday.

The Limpopo-based side needed nothing less than a victory to secure their place in South Africa’s top flight for next season, but the draw proved insufficient to avoid relegation.

Reflecting on the outcome, Freese acknowledged his disappointment at falling short of the club’s survival target.

Magesi will now compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship next season, joining Orbit College, who were automatically relegated from the Betway Premiership after finishing at the bottom of the league table.

“Well, I can’t say what positives I take from it at the end of the day because I didn’t stop the team from getting relegated,” said Freese.

“I came here to help the team avoid relegation. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out the way I wanted them to. So we’ll see what happens going forward.”

Freese also felt the match should have gone in Magesi’s favour but lamented his side’s loss of cohesion in the second half.

“I think we started well and played some good football. We got ourselves into the position we wanted to be in,” he said.

“But in the second half, something went wrong. We were no longer together as a team, and that ultimately cost us.”
