“The List Is Long” — Erasmus Drops Massive Masterplan Revelation Behind Shock Omissions

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has reassured players and supporters that the omission of several high-profile names from his latest squad announcement forms part of a broader strategy aimed at building depth ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

After naming a 46-man squad for the opening stages of the Nations Championship, Erasmus stressed that the absence of experienced campaigners such as Faf de Klerk and Vincent Koch should not be viewed in isolation, with several established internationals currently unavailable due to injury, rest periods or selection considerations.

“There is a much longer list than just Faf and Vincent,” Erasmus explained.

“You can add Bongi, Jaden, Jordan, Ethan, Sebastian, Sacha, Trevor – the list is long.”

The two-time Rugby World Cup-winning coach revealed that the selection of the scrumhalves was influenced by both injuries and the desire to assess other options in the position.

“We always like to have four scrumhalves in our squad. We just feel more comfortable with four of them,” he said.

“Having Cobus (Reinach) back, who is experienced at 35 years old, and Faf is also experienced. With Krappies (Morne van den Berg) and Jaden (Hendrikse) out, we have Grant (Williams) and Embrose (Papier) here. We like our scrumhalves to be experienced.”

While De Klerk’s quality remains unquestioned, Erasmus said the current window presents an opportunity to further evaluate the returning Herschel Jantjies.

“When we pick a team, we normally select one experienced scrumhalf and one who is still finding his feet. We’ve seen Faf and worked with him for two weeks now. We’ve earmarked Herschel, and we’ve always rated him.

“We know what Faf can do and we know what Cobus can do, but we want to have a look at Herschel.”

Erasmus reiterated that the Springboks’ long-term planning remains central to every selection decision.

“We have to understand and accept what we are trying to do with our squad. We are working towards the World Cup, and we want to make sure that when we get there, we’ve looked at everybody.”

The coach also addressed questions around the depth at No. 8, confirming that Juarno Augustus remains firmly on the national radar despite being sidelined by injury.

“We track all players in all competitions when we put together our depth chart. We try to have five or six players in every position, and Juarno was part of that group, but unfortunately he is still injured and unavailable,” he said.

With Evan Roos, Jasper Wiese and Cameron Hanekom among the current contenders, Erasmus said there would be opportunities for others to force their way into contention later in the season.

“We have to test Evan (Roos), Jasper (Wiese), Cameron (Hanekom), and maybe Elrigh (Louw) comes back into the mix as well. The season is long, so hopefully we can give Juarno an opportunity at some stage, but that won’t happen now because he is injured,” he said.

Perhaps most significantly, Erasmus indicated that the squad named this week is far from settled and that supporters should expect extensive rotation throughout the Nations Championship campaign.

“We already have plans in place for the second and third games. We hope to give some players opportunities in different matches,” he said.

“It’s a big squad of 46, but the squad we announced here is definitely not the only group of players we will select from.”

The Springbok coach revealed that a sizeable number of players remain in contention despite not being included in the current squad.

“There are another 15 to 17 players who are either injured, resting, or whom we feel may be better suited to play against Scotland, Argentina or New Zealand. This is not the only squad we are going to use.”

Unlike a Rugby World Cup campaign, where selections are restricted to a fixed group, Erasmus said player movement in and out of the squad will be ongoing.

“It’s not like a World Cup where you can only pick players from this squad. Next Sunday, after our first game, we might send a few guys back to rest and bring a few others in.”

Erasmus also confirmed that experienced forwards Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert are expected to become available after the opening Test against England.

“Just to mention a few, after England, Lood will be available and Franco will be available. We can push him if we need to, but we feel we have enough cover for the first Test match.”

With clashes against Argentina and New Zealand still to come, Erasmus made it clear that player rotation will remain a key component of the Springboks’ approach throughout the tournament.

“By the time we play Argentina and New Zealand, the squad will definitely rotate a lot,” he said.

The Springboks will wrap up their camp preparations on Thursday and reassemble on Sunday, where they will slot back into full Test-match mode.
