Arrows Eliminate Kaizer Chiefs To Secure MTN8 Semifinal Spot

Golden Arrows knocked Kaizer Chiefs out of the MTN8 with a clinical 1-0 victory before a sold-out crowd at FNB Stadium on Sunday night.

Arrows, who last lifted the trophy in 2009, rode their luck in the opening half. Had Nkosi Ngcobo converted his chances, the outcome could have been entirely different. Instead, Amakhosi must wait another year to challenge for the title they last won in the 2014/15 season. Even the second-half introduction of high-profile signing Langelihle Phili failed to spark the hosts into life.

Chiefs entered the fixture as firm favorites, returning to the MTN8 after a two-year absence to play in front of a capacity crowd. Off the pitch, Golden Arrows made headlines of their own, with newly appointed assistant coach Ashley Makhanya sitting alongside Pitso Dladla following the sudden departure of James Madidilane earlier in the week.

The match began cautiously, but Chiefs soon established control, monopolizing possession and trapping Arrows inside their own half. Lebohang Maboe tested the opposition with a volley from distance, while Ngcobo squandered the best opportunity of the half, inexplicably firing wide from close range.

Arrows began to find their rhythm as the half progressed, with Philani Khumalo testing Brandon Petersen from range. Chiefs responded with another late push before the break, but Edward Maova reacted swiftly to smother Ngcobo’s low effort.

The visitors made their second-half pressure count. A slick combination down the flank released Khumalo, who dropped deep before sliding a ball behind the Chiefs defensive line. Facing elimination, Chiefs introduced Phili alongside Etiossa Ighodaro off the bench, replacing Wandile Duba and a regretful Ngcobo. Phili showed immediate intent, firing wide from a tight angle, setting up an intriguing battle with Shezi on the right flank.

Despite late pressure, Chiefs appeared bereft of creative ideas to unlock the visitors’ defense. Arrows held firm and nearly doubled their lead when new arrival Ronaldo Van Neel shot wide on the counterattack.
