Sharks Fullback Set For 2026/27 League One Stint

The Sharks have confirmed that Springbok fullback Aphelele Fassi will leave the Durban-based franchise at the end of the Springboks’ international season in November.

Although Fassi has signed a contract extension with the Sharks, he has been granted permission to spend the 2026/27 season playing in Japan. The Sharks, however, did not disclose the name of his new club.

The 28-year-old, who graduated through the Sharks’ system after joining the union out of school in 2018, has become one of the franchise’s key players. He was also part of the Sharks side that won the EPCR Challenge Cup in 2024, making the Durban outfit the first South African team to lift the European trophy.

“As part of Aphelele Fassi’s renewed contract with the Sharks, he will take up an exciting opportunity in Japan for the 2026/27 season following the conclusion of his Springbok commitments,” the Sharks said in a statement.

“Having grown through the Sharks system since joining out of school in 2018, Aphelele has become a proud product of the Sharks family.

“This opportunity will allow him to experience a new rugby environment, embrace a different culture and continue growing both on and off the field.

“We’re incredibly proud of the journey he has taken and look forward to welcoming him back home in July 2027.”

Fassi joins teammate Grant Williams, who will also head to Japan after the Springboks’ international campaign concludes.

This is not the first time the Sharks have allowed a contracted player to spend a season abroad. Centre Lukhanyo Am enjoyed a stint with Kobelco Kobe Steelers during the 2021/22 season before returning to Durban.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi will also leave the Sharks at the end of the international season, with the loose forward set to rejoin the Stormers following his Springbok commitments. Sharks have also lost Hakeem Kunene to the Vodacom Blue Bulls.
