Okon Reveals Secrets Behind Mbokazi Defensive Partnership

Bafana Bafana defender Ime Okon has opened up about the tactical chemistry that makes his center-back partnership with Mbekezeli Mbokazi so effective at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Head coach Hugo Broos has shown immense faith in the two young defenders, pairing them together since the second match of Group A.
Their partnership emerged after Nkosinathi Sibisi started in the disappointing 2-0 opening loss to Mexico on 11 June.
For the subsequent crunch match against Czechia, Broos handed Okon the starting nod to partner Mbokazi at the back—a high-stakes roll of the dice that earned South Africa a vital 1-1 draw, courtesy of a Teboho Mokoena penalty.
Since earning Broos’s trust, the youthful duo have repaid him with remarkably composed performances at the heart of the national defense.
Although Bafana endured a shaky start by conceding two goals in the opener, Okon and Mbokazi have bounced back impressively.
The pair anchored the defensive unit to consecutive stellar displays, capped off by the historic 1-0 clean sheet against South Korea that sealed South Africa’s first-ever ticket to the World Cup knockout stages.
Okon credited their rapidly growing understanding to the rigorous tactical work they put in away from the cameras.
“Working together in training has helped us understand each other’s game much better,” Okon explained.
“That chemistry has made it easier for us to play together during matches, and we’re becoming more comfortable with every game.
“I mean, we work together in training.”
With the duo in fine form, Broos is set to unleash them again when Bafana Bafana square off against Canada in their monumental Round of 32 clash at the Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.
“The more we train together, the more we understand each other,” Okon added.
“But it’s not only us. It’s the whole defence, the guys in front of us and our goalkeeper behind us. The more we train together, the better the understanding becomes among everyone. It just works.”
