Bafana Exit World Cup With Pride Despite Heartbreaking Loss

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams struggled for words, his face etched with disappointment, after South Africa crashed out in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup.

South Africa became the first nation eliminated in this stage after conceding a late goal to Canada at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.

Canada, one of the tournament’s co-hosts, will now face the winner of the match between Morocco and the Netherlands in the Round of 16.

However, South Africa can return home with their heads held high, having reached the knockout phase for the first time in the nation’s history.

Additionally, Hugo Broos made history by becoming the oldest coach in World Cup knockout-phase history at 74 years and 79 days old. He surpassed the record previously held by Óscar Tabárez, who was 71 when he guided Uruguay to the 2018 quarter-finals.

“I’m so proud of the boys,” Williams said after the match.

“To come here and compete, we can leave here with our heads held high.

“I’m proud of the boys—the effort, the character, the mindset. We kept fighting. We didn’t have the best start to the tournament; our backs were against the wall.

“But to come out here today and show what we’re capable of, we can only be proud.”

The pain was visible on Williams’ face, despite having produced an outstanding performance across both halves to keep his side in the game after his defense faltered.

“It is a very young team,” Williams continued.

“This is a valuable lesson for the future. But we can only be proud.”

As this was coach Broos’ final game in charge of Bafana Bafana—concluding a tenure of just over five years—South Africa had hoped to continue making history by advancing further in the competition.

“It is sad to go out like this,” said Williams.

“But I know he will be proud. He saw his team competing because we showed resilience and belief. That is what he instilled in us from day one—that belief. Even when we had so many doubters, he always believed in us.

“What he has done for South African football, we can only thank him for giving us that belief and hope. He inspired the nation. If this is his last game, then he can leave with his head held high. Amazing.”
