Thousands Turn Durban Pink As the 2026 SPAR Women’s Race Celebrates Fitness And Empowerment

Durban came alive on Sunday morning as thousands of women took to the streets for another highly successful edition of the SPAR Women’s Race, transforming the city into a vibrant celebration of fitness, unity, and empowerment.

From the early hours, participants gathered in high spirits. Infectious smiles, sheer determination, and unmatched enthusiasm set the tone for an unforgettable day.

Whether tackling the competitive 10km route or enjoying the lively 5km run/walk, participants embraced the event with incredible energy, cementing its status as a premier highlight on KwaZulu-Natal’s annual sporting calendar.

The event also drew high-profile backing from provincial and local government leaders. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Hon. Mntomuhle Khawula, led by example by completing the 5km race, demonstrating his department’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and active community participation.

Joining him on the day was eThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, who voiced his immense pride in the event and praised the thousands of women who took part.

The atmosphere across the beachfront precinct was electric, with thick crowds of spectators lining the routes to cheer on the field. Once again, the race showcased the unique power of sport to bridge communities, bringing together women of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels for a morning filled with camaraderie and shared achievement.

While every woman who crossed the finish line achieved something special, elite recognition belongs to the top three elite finishers in the 10km category, who produced world-class performances at the front of the field.

10km Elite Top Three Finishers:

  • 🥈 Selam Gebre – 31:45
  • 🥉 Neheng Khatala – 32:09

Kavanagh’s blistering winning time of 31:32 caps off months of rigorous dedication, discipline, and hard work. The elite trio engaged in a thrilling tactical battle from the starting gun, displaying immense grit all the way to the finish line and inspiring thousands of amateur runners trailing in their wake.
