Marsch Explains Tactical Plan To Stop Williams

Canada coach Jesse Marsch has revealed that his side deliberately avoided pressing Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Marsch explained that chasing the shot-stopper would have inadvertently opened up dangerous pockets of space for South African stars like Teboho Mokoena and Oswin Appollis.

Whenever Williams had possession, Canada’s refusal to press caught many by surprise. However, the co-hosts trusted their structural discipline, ultimately relying on a swift late transition to edge South Africa 1-0 thanks to a 92nd-minute strike from Stephen Eustáquio.

With the victory secured, Canada advances to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of Monday’s Round of 32 clash between Morocco and the Netherlands at NRG Stadium in Houston.

“We knew about Mokoena, Appollis and all of their attacking talent,” Marsch explained after the match.

“We knew that if we gave them too much space, they could hurt us. That’s why we didn’t chase the goalkeeper that much, even when he was standing on the ball trying to slow things down.

“The last thing we wanted was for the game to become stretched, lose our discipline and allow their talented players space to get on the ball and create combinations.

“They were still able to do that at certain moments, but I think we limited South Africa from becoming too dangerous and creating big chances.

“That’s an accomplishment because they’re still an explosive team. I think our structure, our discipline and our commitment to making the game difficult for them were what won us the match.”

South Africa sat deep for large periods, frustrating Canada’s attacking transitions. The tense encounter seemed destined for extra time until Eustáquio broke the deadlock. His match-winning performance earned him the Player of the Match honors.

The strike marked Eustáquio’s first international goal since late 2023, and his fourth on American soil following three goals during the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. It stands contextually as the most important goal of his career. Yet, even after securing Canada’s first-ever World Cup knockout victory, the midfielder is already looking ahead.

“It started when we came out of the group stage,” Eustaquio said on FIFA’s official website.

“I think when it comes to the knockout stages of the World Cup, belief plays a big part. Now we’re going to face Morocco or the Netherlands, and who knows? On a good day, we can make things happen.

“We have a special group. We feel like brothers, and when we fight for each other, special things can happen. I’m over the moon, but the job is not finished.”
