“It’s Very Hurtful” — Mokoena Lifts Lid On Dressing Room Devastation

Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena says the team is proud of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time, but admits there is still a sense of disappointment following their elimination.

South Africa’s historic campaign came to an end on Sunday after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Canada, who scored a late winner to book their place in the next round.

Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32 for the first time in the nation’s history, becoming the first South African men’s national team to progress to the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup.

However, they also became the first side to be eliminated in the Round of 32 under the tournament’s expanded format.

Reflecting on the defeat, Mokoena admitted the players were left heartbroken, believing they were capable of achieving more.

“Of course, I am happy that we reached the knockout stages, but the way we lost, we felt we could have done better,” Mokoena told Sporty TV after the match.

“So, that feeling is still there because the way we lost is very hurtful. But we can be proud of ourselves and of how we performed throughout the tournament.”

The 28-year-old, who returned to the starting line-up after serving a suspension, said the squad could hold their heads high for the way they responded after a difficult start to the tournament.

“I’m proud of the group. I’m proud of the guys. I think everyone played very well, and we really appreciate the support from back home,” he said.

“To those who believed in us from the very beginning, and even those who didn’t, we are grateful because the criticism after our first game was fair. We didn’t play well in that match, but we responded strongly as a group.

“We appreciate everything that happened throughout the tournament and everyone who stood behind us.”
