SA Officials Get Major FIFA World Cup Knockout Nod For Massive Ronaldo vs Modrić Decider

South African match officials Abongile Tom and Zakhele Siwela have been appointed by FIFA to officiate the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash between Portugal and Croatia, marking another significant milestone in their impressive tournament campaign.

The highly anticipated knockout fixture will take place at Toronto Stadium on Friday, with kick-off scheduled for 01:00. The match is expected to attract widespread attention as two European football heavyweights battle for a place in the Round of 16.

Tom has been appointed as the fourth official, while Siwela will serve as the reserve assistant referee. These are the same roles the South African officials have fulfilled in each of their previous appointments at the tournament. Friday’s fixture will be their fifth assignment at the FIFA World Cup, underlining the confidence FIFA continues to place in their performances.

It will also be the second time Tom and Siwela officiate a Portugal match at this tournament. They previously served in the same capacities during Portugal’s Group K encounter against DR Congo.

The officiating team for Friday’s match will be led by Norwegian referee Espen Eskås, who will be assisted by Jan Erik Engan and Isaak Bashevkin as the first and second assistant referees, respectively.

The clash between Portugal and Croatia is expected to be a tense and fiercely contested affair, despite the two nations never having met at a FIFA World Cup.

They have, however, built a competitive rivalry through meetings in the UEFA Nations League and international friendlies. In their last five encounters, Portugal have recorded three victories, Croatia have won once, while the remaining match ended in a draw.

Both teams progressed to the knockout stage after finishing second in their respective groups. Portugal finished runners-up in Group K with five points, while Croatia secured second place in Group L with six points.

With a place in the Round of 16 at stake, both sides will be determined to extend their World Cup journey in what promises to be an exciting and closely contested encounter.
