Hundreds Line Hluhluwe Streets To Welcome Mbokazi

Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi received a hero’s welcome as hundreds of residents lined the streets of Hluhluwe in the Big 5 Hlabisa Local Municipality to celebrate his homecoming following his standout performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although Bafana Bafana’s tournament campaign ended in the knockout stages with a narrow defeat to Canada, Mbokazi emerged as one of South Africa’s breakout stars.

His defensive display in that final match earned widespread international praise, sparking intense speculation about a high-profile move to European football.
The tournament marked a historic milestone for the 20-year-old, who became the first player from the uMkhanyakude district to represent Bafana Bafana at a World Cup.

Speaking at the homecoming gathering, uMkhanyakude SAFA President Celani Mbuyazi praised the young defender for putting the region on the map.
“We are incredibly proud of you for making history and becoming uMkhanyakude’s first Bafana Bafana star,” Mbuyazi said.
“We have always envied other regions that produced legends like Neil Tovey, Helman Mkhalele, and Sizwe Motaung. Now, you have elevated us to an international pedestal.”
Mbokazi, who moved from Orlando Pirates to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire during the January transfer window, has dominated headlines across North America. Reports suggest that Italian Serie A giants Napoli are actively monitoring his progress.

His agent, Basia Michaels, is adamant that Mbokazi’s talent warrants a place in an elite league and a price tag that reflects his true worth on the global market.
“For me, the most important thing is to find him a home in a top-five European league,” Michaels told Sportsboom.
“I believe Mbokazi deserves to play in the UEFA Champions League. There’s no question about it.”
Michaels also emphasized that any European suitor must meet their valuation of the player.
“I believe he deserves fair market value,” Michaels stated. “I’ve explained it before: when I ask for a certain figure, sometimes people say, ‘No, he can’t get that’. Why not? European, North American, and South American players are getting those numbers. The reality is I want fair value for him.”
However, Michaels cautioned that any potential jump from the MLS must be managed carefully to ensure the young defender continues his rapid development.
“Mbokazi has had a phenomenal World Cup campaign,” Michaels explained. “But the destination has to be the right club, the right league, and the right price. Chicago Fire bought him, so the evaluation of the player and what a new club is willing to pay must match what we are willing to accept.”
