“When I Got the News, It Was Difficult”: Appollis Opens Up On Loss Of Adams
Orlando Pirates winger Oswin Appollis has spoken about the emotional pain of losing his close friend and Bafana Bafana teammate Jayden Adams, admitting that receiving the heartbreaking news was one of the toughest moments of his life.
Adams, who was laid to rest this past weekend, touched the hearts of many across South Africa and around the world following his untimely passing.
The talented midfielder had recently represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he and Appollis shared memorable moments while proudly wearing the national jersey.
Their friendship extended far beyond football. Both players hailed from Cape Town and had forged a close bond over the years, making Adams’ death an especially devastating loss for Appollis.
Speaking publicly about the tragedy, Appollis admitted that hearing the news of Adams’ passing left him deeply shaken.
“Obviously, when I got the news, it was difficult,” he said of Adams, whose other name was Oswin.
“But, you know, things happen. The man above is the one who decides these things.
“For me, I have to continue doing my job because this is my job. If I don’t do anything, then what will happen to my family and to me?”
As he continues to mourn the loss of his friend, Appollis hopes to honour Adams’ memory by giving his all every time he steps onto the pitch, carrying with him the memories of a friendship that will never be forgotten.
The Buccaneers will host newly promoted Milford FC at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday in their Betway Premiership opener, with Appollis hoping to help his side begin the new season on a positive note while paying tribute to his late friend.
The 2025/26 Midfielder of the Season believes it is vital for Pirates to start the campaign with a victory but insists they will not take their opponents lightly.
“It’s very important to start on a good note,” he added.
“As I said, we never underestimate the opponent. They have quality players because sometimes people only watch them when they win.
“I think they have a good squad, but we are well prepared. We have the whole week to prepare.”
