“What Worked Last Season Won’t Work”: Chaine Issues Strong Pirates Warning
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine says the club will approach the 2026/27 season with a different mindset, insisting that what worked last season will not necessarily guarantee success this time around.
Pirates enjoyed a memorable 2025/26 campaign, winning a domestic treble and becoming the only club to lift more than one trophy during the season.
The Buccaneers claimed the MTN8, Carling Knockout and Betway Premiership titles, ending their long wait for the league crown while dethroning Mamelodi Sundowns, who had won the championship for eight consecutive seasons.
Pirates’ success was also recognised at the Premier Soccer League Awards, where the club scooped several individual honours.
Chaine, who was named the 2025/26 Goalkeeper of the Season, believes the squad must adopt a fresh mentality as they prepare to defend their titles.
“Different mindset every season,” said Chaine.
“What worked in 2025/26 won’t work in the 2026/27 season. We need more from ourselves and more from everyone connected to Orlando Pirates. It’s a different mindset – a mindset of achieving even greater things. You’re now the team being chased rather than the one doing the chasing. That requires a completely different perspective on what you’re up against.”
Pirates will kick off their new campaign with a Betway Premiership clash against Milford FC at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.
