‘Zero Margin For Error’: Ellis Vows Banyana Will Bring ‘A-Game’ Against Nigeria Clash

Banyana Banyana have vowed to bring their A-game when they face bitter rivals Nigeria in a crucial FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off qualifier at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca on Thursday.

Both nations suffered quarterfinal eliminations at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026), missing out on the four automatic qualification spots for the global showpiece.

However, they have been thrown a lifeline through the play-off route. The winner will take another step forward on the long and demanding path toward securing a ticket to South America for next year’s tournament.

“It’s not the place we want to be, but we’ve been given another opportunity, a very big opportunity to go on a very long journey,” said Ellis.

“We obviously have to bring our A game. There’s no margin for error. The disappointment of losing the previous game is probably going to drive us to get a positive result.

“It’s not going to be an easy game. It’s two big guns of African football, not where we want to be, and one of us will not be going further ahead to qualify for the World Cup.

“It’s a big game for us. We know how big it is, the players know how big it is, and I’m sure Nigeria know how big it is. We just have to do what we have to do, execute our plans and make sure that we are victorious at the end of the day.”

The two African powerhouses last met at the previous edition of WAFCON, where the Super Falcons edged the contest en route to lifting their 10th continental title.

However, with both teams now backed into a corner, Banyana captain Refiloe Jane declared that South Africa will leave everything on the pitch to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

“It will be a crucial match for the team. We came here with the objective of qualifying for the World Cup, and we would have liked to qualify at the first opportunity, but things didn’t go our way,” she said.

“We keep our heads held high. We have another opportunity to do so, so our focus is on the next match, to try to give it our all and continue on this journey.”

The high-stakes clash features Africa’s top two sides going toe-to-toe in the CAF rankings.

“The rivalry against Nigeria goes back over the years. We just have to believe and put in the work, and we have shown in the past that we can do it.

“It’s a real do-or-die game, and we want to leave the field knowing we have given it our all,” Jane continued.

South Africa and Nigeria kick off at 22:00 SA time, while Ivory Coast and Ghana contest the other play-off fixture at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium at 19:00 SA time (18:00 local time).
