‘Time To Make Our Own Name’ – Mendes Sets Sights On AFCON U20

South Africa Under-20 striker Steven Mendes has expressed his pride after helping Amajita win the COSAFA Cup, saying the achievement is an important step as the team looks to make a name for itself.

Amajita defeated hosts Mozambique 2-1 in Friday’s final of the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) COSAFA Qualifier.

The victory secured the regional title for South Africa and earned the team qualification for the 2027 Under-20 AFCON.

Mendes, who finished the tournament as the top scorer and claimed the Golden Boot after scoring six goals, reflected on what the achievement means to him and his teammates.

“I think it’s a proud moment for us as the new generation of the Under-20,” Mendes said.

“Now it is for us to make our own name, and I think it’s a good feeling.”

Mendes added that the team will now shift its focus to the AFCON and work on addressing the areas where it can improve.

“I think now our main focus is to prepare well for the upcoming tournament,” Mendes said.

“We know we performed well in the COSAFA; I think now it’s time to fix what needs fixing and come back stronger.”
