Nedbank Unveils 11th Multipurpose Sports Court Along With Durban City
Chatsworth has welcomed the handover of its new multipurpose sports court, providing the local community with an upgraded space where residents can participate in, develop and enjoy sport.
The facility, which accommodates five sporting codes, is the 11th multipurpose sports court to be handed over as part of efforts to expand access to sporting infrastructure and create more opportunities for young people to participate in organised sport by Nedbank.
Durban City, as a winner of the Nedbank Cup last season, were asked to choose which school to build sports court and they went to Chatsworth, where they play their home matches, at Oceanview Primary School.
The new court is expected to provide children and young athletes with a safe and accessible environment where they can develop their skills, build confidence and potentially identify pathways towards competitive sport.
The handover also highlights the importance of community-based sporting facilities in supporting school sport and encouraging young people to remain active. By bringing sporting infrastructure closer to communities, residents can access facilities without having to travel long distances to participate in training sessions, recreational activities or competitions.
MEC Khawula said the facility would play an important role in identifying and nurturing young talent, particularly among schoolchildren.
“With this multipurpose sports court, we want to uncover talent; we want to develop talent and nurture talent in schools. So, it’s going to go a long way in terms of providing for School Sport and ensuring that our ‘Dlala Thursdays’ are a reality,” said MEC Khawula.
The facility is expected to support a range of sporting activities, allowing different codes to be played at one venue and giving community members greater opportunities to participate. It can also serve as a platform for schools, clubs and community organisations to organise training sessions, development programmes and sporting events.
The investment in multipurpose sports facilities is particularly significant for young people, as access to quality sporting infrastructure can help create structured activities outside the classroom.
