Baartman Details Chiefs Revival Under Da Cruz
Kaizer Chiefs attacker Luke Baartman is determined to maintain his regular game time at Naturena after making a strong start to the new season under coach Fernando Da Cruz.
The 20-year-old has featured in all of Chiefs’ matches across all competitions this season, scoring one goal and earning a Man of the Match award.
Baartman says his priority is to continue working hard and getting regular minutes on the pitch, believing consistent club football can also improve his chances of representing South Africa.
“I wouldn’t say good. I would say it has been a great start for me, playing all the games so far in the league,” he said.
“And it’s just for me to keep on working and keep on getting game time. If you don’t play, I don’t think you’re going to get called up.
“I think if you don’t play, you’re not going to get called up. So, for me, it’s just to work, keep on playing and keep on getting game time.”
Baartman’s situation has improved significantly this season after he struggled for regular opportunities last campaign under Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.
Despite not being injured, the Cape Town Spurs academy product made only seven appearances in all competitions last season, with the most frustrating aspect being that he was introduced after the 80th minute in all seven matches.
Under Da Cruz, however, Baartman has become a regular part of the Chiefs setup, allowing him to build confidence and develop through consistent competitive football.
His progress has also earned him recognition at international level, with the attacker currently with the South Africa U23 national team.
The U23 side are preparing to face Algeria in two international friendly matches, with the first scheduled for Thursday at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.
The matches form part of South Africa’s preparations for the qualifiers for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, which will be held in the United States from July 14 to July 30, 2028.
Baartman believes representing his country could be an important step in his development and potentially have a major impact on his career.
“Yeah, it’s always a good thing to play for your country, you know, to represent them,” he added.
“It’s big to play for your national team, and that can also change your career, playing for your national team.
“So, for me, it’s just to keep on working and keep on getting better.”
