All Black Legend Signs Player-Mentor Role In Durban

Former All Blacks midfield great Ma’a Nonu is set to bring a wealth of experience to the Sharks after joining the Durban-based outfit ahead of the new season in a player-mentor role.

Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has secured the services of the legendary New Zealand centre, with the move aimed primarily at accelerating the development of the club’s emerging backline talent. Nonu is expected to work closely with promising outside backs Jurenzo Julius, Jaco Williams and Zekhethelo Siyaya, passing on the knowledge gained during one of rugby’s most decorated careers.

While mentoring will be his primary responsibility, the 44-year-old will also be available for selection should the need arise. Nonu is expected to provide experienced cover at inside centre during periods when Sharks captain André Esterhuizen is away on Springbok duty, offering a similar blend of power, physicality and leadership in midfield.

“Opportunities for someone of Ma’a’s calibre to spend time in our environment don’t come around often. While his achievements on the field are exceptional, it is his professionalism, leadership and understanding of what it takes to consistently perform at the highest level that make this such an exciting opportunity for our club,” Sharks CEO Shaun Bryans said in a statement confirming Nonu’s signing.

“As we continue to build for the future, exposing our environment to world-class performers who have achieved sustained success is invaluable. His presence over the next few months will add significant value to our playing group through the mentorship, standards and rugby knowledge he will share with our team every day,” Bryans added.

The appointment reunites Pietersen and Nonu, who forged a strong relationship during their time together at French club Toulon after spending years as fierce rivals on the international stage. The pair frequently faced off in Springbok-All Blacks Tests, as well as in Super Rugby clashes between the Sharks and the Hurricanes.

Head coach JP Pietersen added: “The best players don’t just leave memories, they leave standards. That’s what Ma’a brings. Every conversation, every training session and every interaction is an opportunity for our players to learn what excellence looks like.”

Nonu’s rugby résumé is among the finest of the professional era. The midfield powerhouse earned 103 Test caps for New Zealand, winning back-to-back Rugby World Cups in 2011 and 2015. At club level, he made 174 Super Rugby appearances and has played more than 400 first-class matches, representing the Blues, Highlanders and Hurricanes before enjoying successful spells with Toulon, Black Rams Tokyo and Major League Rugby outfit San Diego Legion.

Nonu said the opportunity to work alongside Pietersen and help nurture the Sharks’ next generation of talent made the decision an easy one.

“I have immense respect for JP. We competed against each other for many years, and I’m really looking forward to working with him and the team.

Despite being in the twilight of his playing career, Nonu has continued to showcase his enduring quality, most recently featuring for Toulon against the Stormers in the Investec Champions Cup earlier this year. His arrival is expected to provide the Sharks with invaluable experience both on and off the field as the Durban club continues to build for the future under Pietersen’s leadership.
