Arrows In Coaching Limbo
Golden Arrows is in coaching limbo as Mabhuti Khenyeza remains unsure about next season’s leader.
Steve Komphela’s abrupt departure to rejoin Mamelodi Sundowns has left Golden Arrows scrambling for a new head coach. Komphela returned to Arrows in March to steady the ship after a string of defeats under Khenyeza. However, his own departure just weeks later has thrown the club’s leadership into disarray.
Khenyeza, who took sole charge after Vusi Vilakazi left for Chippa United in September last year, remains in the interim role for pre-season training. However, he expressed his uncertainty about the permanent head coach position.
“I don’t know,” Khenyeza told Sportswire. “At the moment, I’m the one in charge, just doing the job.”
Despite the unexpected change, Khenyeza believes the players are handling the situation well.
“Our players are very mature, especially in this situation,” said Khenyeza, who is assisted by Musa Bilankulu. “Their focus is to be here and play. Decisions made at the top are not theirs. They’re here to work and perform their duties.”
Adding to the uncertainty, Khenyeza hasn’t received any directives from management regarding the club’s goals for the upcoming season.
“I don’t know,” replied Khenyeza. “I haven’t met with management yet. Maybe I still need to wait for their mandate.”
These comments from Khenyeza come after Golden Arrows were drawn against AmaZulu in the KZN Premier’s Cup playoff match in the pre-season tournament that is scheduled on 27 and 28 July at Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Stadium in Ulundi.
Meanwhile, Arrows have bolstered their squad with the signing of Namibian goalkeeper Edward Maova, who was previously at University of Pretoria.
