Bad Start For Sundowns & UWC In The CAF WCL
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and University of Western Cape Ladies began the CAF Women’s Champions League with disappointing defeats in Morocco over the weekend.
UWC made their debut in the Champions League on Saturday, unfortunately, things didn’t go well as they lost 2-0 against TP Mazembe of Congo.
Thinasonke Mbuli’s side failed to have at least one shot on target in the whole match. The Cape Town-based side won the 2024 CAF Women’s League COSAFA Qualifiers in August this year to book themselves a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
UWC defeated Gaborone United 9-8 on penalties following their 1-1 draw in the 120 minutes in the final. The defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns lost 1-0 against the Egyptians FS Masar on Sunday in their first game. Banyana Ba Style made a penalty on a stroke of halftime and the opponent made sure they capitalised.
Both Sundowns and UWC are in position number three in Group A & B. UWC will play their next game against Aigles de la Médina on Tuesday at Stade El Abdi. Mamelodi Sundowns on the other side will be playing against CBE on Wednesday.
This game will take place in Stade Larbi Zaouli. Both SA sides need to win their games for them to bring back their hope of winning this competition.
They still have chances since they are left with two games in their groups. The Brazilians won all their games in the group stages last year and finished in first place in group A.
