The Historic Opener: Mexico at Estadio Azteca
As previously teased, Bafana Bafana will open the entire 2026 World Cup against co-hosts Mexico on 11 June. This monumental fixture takes place at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, one of the world’s most historic football venues. The game is a direct repeat of the memorable 2010 FIFA World Cup opening match.
Bafana’s second match on 18 June will be against the winner of the European playoff, which will be contested by Denmark, North Macedonia, Czechia, or the Republic of Ireland next March.
Coach Hugo Broos’ side will conclude their Group A campaign against South Korea. With the new format expanding the knockout round to 32 teams, securing a result in this final group match will be vital for South Africa’s chances of making history.
