Bafana Face Mexico & South Korea In Group A

Bafana Bafana have been drawn into Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, setting the stage for a dramatic tournament opener against co-hosts Mexico.

This fixture is a nostalgic repeat of the historic 2010 World Cup opening match played at FNB Stadium in South Africa that ended to a 1-1 draw.

Bafana Bafana, making their first World Cup appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010, will also face a strong South Korea side. The fourth team in the group will be determined by the winner of the European Playoff between Denmark, North Macedonia, Czechia, and the Republic of Ireland. The playoff matches will take place in March.  

The Rematch: Mexico vs. South Africa

The opening match of the 2026 tournament will feature Mexico vs. South Africa, scheduled to take place on 11 June 2026, at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Adding another layer of history to the clash, Mexico’s coach, Javier Aguirre, returns to the World Cup having previously coached El Tri in the 2010 tournament opener against Bafana Bafana.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, which took place in Washington D.C., was a highly anticipated event. Co-hosts USA, Canada, and Mexico were placed in Pot 1 alongside the world’s top-ranked nations.

The draw featured appearances by notable figures, including seven-time MLB All-Star Aaron Judge, who drew South Africa’s ball, and a pre-event exchange between USA President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
