Banyana Secure Dominant Victory Over Zambia In Friendly

Banyana Banyana delivered a clinical performance to defeat a strong Zambian side, featuring the formidable Barbra Banda, 2-0 in a friendly match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis, who made several changes to her squad, witnessed her team’s highly charged display in Pretoria. This match served as crucial preparation for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco next month, where they aim to defend their title.

The South Africans started the game on the front foot. Jermaine Seoposenwe, effectively utilizing the channels, peeled away from her marker and made an unchecked run. However, her attempted cross was pushed away by Zambia goalkeeper Catherine Musonda, averting the immediate danger. Seoposenwe again weaved inside the box, but she carried the ball too far, allowing Zambia to clear.

Zambia, however, was not idle. Danger lady Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji consistently troubled the Banyana defense. Despite both sides attacking in what was a competitive first half in Pretoria, neither team managed to find a goal.

Banyana Banyana finally broke the deadlock in the 74th minute of the second half when Bongeka Gamede’s free-kick soared through the air, beating Zambian goalkeeper Musonda convincingly.

The second goal came when Zambia failed to clear a long ball from Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini. Seoposenwe shrugged off a challenge, sprinted clear on goal, and expertly slotted the ball past a helpless Musonda.

Following the second goal, Banyana weathered a brief storm from Zambia to successfully see out the match.

This victory marks Banyana Banyana’s second consecutive win, following their spirited 3-2 triumph over Botswana last week at the same venue. This fixture not only concluded the #ThreeNations series but also provided vital preparation for the upcoming WAFCON in Morocco in July, where Banyana are focused on defending their trophy.
