Bay Chair Explains Why They Play Pirates Twice In Short Space Of Time

Richards Bay chairman Sifiso Biyela is not frustrated over his team’s two matches against Orlando Pirates within a short period. He attributes this scheduling conflict to changes in the CAF calendar and Pirates’ participation in the CAF Champions League.
Next Tuesday, Pirates and Richards Bay will meet at Orlando Stadium in a league fixture. This unexpected clash has surprised many, as both teams have had limited opportunities to play other opponents.
Pirates previously defeated Richards Bay in September at King Zwelithini Stadium, with Kabelo Dlamini scoring a late free-kick.
Many believe that Pirates is getting the rub of the green in getting a favorable fixture list, as they currently lead the Betway Premiership by a significant 18 points after winning all six of their matches.
Biyela explained the situation: “To be honest, this is a matter beyond the PSL’s control. The clash of fixtures and CAF’s updated calendar have forced these rearrangements. The PSL doesn’t have the authority to dictate CAF’s schedule. This situation affects other countries as well, as this fixture was rescheduled after the original fixture list was finalized.”
He further elaborated: “Originally, Pirates and Richards Bay were scheduled to play next year. This current fixture is a result of CAF’s changes. It’s not just Pirates who are affected, but other CAF participants as well.”
Mamelodi Sundowns face a similar challenge, as they will play Polokwane City next week, just days after their league match against the same opponent which took place last weekend and the African giants lost.
Biyela made these comments while watching Richards Bay train on Thursday. His team is set to face Cape Town City in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.
