Broos Reveals 75% Of Players Decided For World Cup

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has revealed that he is close to finalising his squad selection for the FIFA World Cup.

Broos indicated that only a few positions are still up for grabs before he submits his final squad to FIFA on 30 May. South Africa are set to open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium on 11 June.

The Belgian mentor is in the process of fine-tuning his squad, with Bafana Bafana set to face Panama for the second time during the current FIFA-sanctioned international break at a sold-out DHL Stadium on Tuesday.

The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in their first friendly at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

“I think, first of all, let’s say 70 percent of the selection is already in my head,” said Broos.

“Everything depends a little bit on the form of the players. Maybe in the next three months they won’t play for their teams or could suffer injuries—those kinds of things.

“But 75 percent of the 23 or 25 players is already decided in my mind, and I will not change that.

“Not even tomorrow [Tuesday], even if we play a bad game. But there are still positions that I want to assess in the next few weeks before I make my final decision.

“On the other hand, we played a very good game on Friday, and let’s hope we can confirm that again on Tuesday.

“There is still some work to be done because going to the World Cup is a different challenge.

“We still have to work on certain details to improve. That’s why we will have a 10-day preparation camp just before the World Cup, where we will focus on those details and aim to be more ready than we are now.

“Because, at this stage, it would be a bit too soon to play a World Cup match within a week or 10 days.”
