Bvuma Weighs In On Foreign Goalkeepers In PSL

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has weighed in on the influx of his foreign counterparts amid calls for Premier Soccer League clubs to give preference to local shot-stoppers for the future of the national team.
This comes after many believed that the absence of Ronwen Williams in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan last month exposed a conundrum of a lack of suitable replacements for the Downs No.1. Bafana Bafana conceded four goals in two outings, with the spotlight mainly on AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, who was beaten twice from a distance against the Cranes and was subsequently dropped for Sipho Chaine four days later.
However, Bvuma, who has been playing second fiddle to Rwanda’s No.1 and new signing from TS Galaxy Fiacre Ntwari, doesn’t believe that adopting a strict goalkeeping policy like the North Africans is a solution as he welcomes foreign competition.
“Well, I don’t think we can go the Egyptian route, or is it North African? I don’t know, for me if a goalkeeper is good enough then let him come, let him play, if he’s good enough to be a first choice let him be a first choice, ” said Bvuma.
Meanwhile, SuperSport United goalkeeper Ricardo Goss recently came out stressing the idea of prioritizing local goalkeepers, but the Chiefs goal-minder begs to differ, citing Dennis Onyango’s impact in South African football as an example.
“I’ll make an example with Denis Onyango, I think I saw one interview of Ricardo [Goss], I mean he’s [Onyango] solid, ” Bvuma noted.
“He’s been solid for the teams that he’s played for, I mean for me I don’t have a problem with the foreign goalkeepers coming and playing as long as they do well when they play.”
Moreover, the 29-year-old shot-stopper has dismissed the notion that Ntwari, who has been getting the nod to start in goal from coach Nasreddine Nabi, is blocking his pathway to the national team, insisting that he will return to Hugo Broos’ plans.
“I don’t think so, and the reason I say that is because I believe it’s all entirely up to me if I make the team or not,” said Bvuma, who made his Bafana debut in July 2017 in the COSAFA cup under then head coach Stuart Baxter.
“It has nothing to do with the foreign goalkeeper that’s playing in our team for example, so for me, I just have to do my hard work and when I get my chance to play, I will be back in the national team again.”
The Chiefs academy graduate is in contention to start in goal against Marumo Gallants in the CUFA cup at Free State stadium on Sunday, as Ntwari is currently away on national duty with Rwanda.
