CAF To Investigate Nigeria Vs Libya Matter

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that it will investigate the “disturbing” incident involving Nigeria, who were stranded at the airport ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Libya on Tuesday.

Nigeria players, in a series of tweets, including stars like William Troost-Ekong and Victor Boniface, accused Libya of underhanded tactics. They were stranded at the airport for nearly 14 hours and were diverted away from Benghazi, where the match was scheduled to take place.

Instead of landing in Benghazi, they were diverted to Al Abraq, approximately 230 kilometers away from their intended destination.

Ekong, the captain of the Super Eagles, said their plane was being refueled and they were leaving Al Abraq to return home.

“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it was informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities,” CAF said in a statement.

“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.”

According to reports, Libya was unhappy with the treatment they received from Nigeria’s football authority during the match on Friday in Uyo, and this apparent retaliation could result in a hefty fine from CAF.

Nigeria, who lost the AFCON final earlier this year to the hosts Ivory Coast, are at the top of Group D with seven points after three matches. A win in Libya on Tuesday would have secured their spot in the AFCON finals, which will take place in Morocco next year.
