Broos: No Extra Motivation Needed

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says there is no extra motivation needed against Congo other than the knowledge that a win on Tuesday would qualify them for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

Congo will host Bafana Bafana at Stade Alphonse Massamba-Débat in Brazzaville in the Group K Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Tuesday (18:00), needing just three points to qualify for the AFCON finals with two games to spare.

Bafana Bafana thrashed the Congolese 5-0 in the first match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday, moving to seven points from three games. They are currently second in the group behind Uganda due to the head-to-head rule.

While the first leg appeared to be straightforward, Broos has warned his charges that it won’t be easy in Congo, especially considering they will be playing on a synthetic pitch, which his players are not accustomed to.

“We are ready because we know that a victory will qualify us,” said Broos.

“There is no other motivation than this. This would be the second time South Africa would have qualified for the AFCON under my leadership, and we want to achieve that on Tuesday.

“After the first leg’s result, Tuesday’s match will be different. If you lose 5-0, it’s an elimination, and I’m sure Congo will want revenge.

“They will be highly motivated to beat us. If they lose, it’s over for them. We know what to expect and we are going to play against a team that may be different because at home we were leading 3-0 at halftime, and now it’s a new game.

“On Friday, it was a wonderful night, but Tuesday will be something else, and we are aware of that.”

Burkina Faso became the first nation to join hosts Morocco in qualifying for the AFCON finals after defeating Burundi 2-0 on Sunday.

The top two in the 12 qualification pools advance to the finals, which will be played from 21 December next year to 18 January 2026, except for Morocco’s Group B, where one other team will qualify.
