CAF To Take Action After Senegal Walk-Off Controversy In AFCON Final Against Morocco
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that it will take appropriate action following the controversial Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco in Rabat on Sunday, which was overshadowed by Senegal coach Pape Thiaw urging his players to leave the field.
Referee Jean Jacques Ndala awarded a stoppage-time penalty after being advised by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to consult the pitchside monitor and review El Hadji Malick Diouf’s challenge on Brahim Díaz.
The decision came after left-back Diouf appeared to wrestle Díaz around the neck during stoppage time. Senegal players reacted angrily to the call, particularly as a Senegal goal had earlier been disallowed, prompting Thiaw to instruct his players to walk off the pitch.
However, his decision was challenged by former Liverpool forward Sadio Mané, who remained on the field and persuaded his team-mates to return as they were heading towards the dressing room.
After a delay of approximately 17 minutes, Díaz stepped up to take the penalty, but his attempted Panenka was brilliantly saved by Édouard Mendy.
Senegal eventually claimed victory when Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of extra time, securing a second AFCON title in five years for the Lions of Teranga.
The triumph followed Senegal’s 2022 AFCON success, when they defeated another North African nation, Egypt, in the final.
In a statement, CAF strongly criticised the conduct displayed during the match.
“The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat,” CAF said.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour during matches, especially acts targeting the refereeing team or match organisers.
“CAF is reviewing all available footage and will refer the matter to the competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty.”
It remains to be seen what sanctions, if any, CAF will impose on Senegal following the disruption, which has drawn widespread criticism from the global football community.
