Chiefs Face Left-Back Conundrum

Kaizer Chiefs may have another problem at left-back, as newly signed defender Bongani Sam appears to be injured.

The former Orlando Pirates defender was spotted wearing a protective boot on his left foot, alongside Edmilson Dove, who is also nursing an injury to the same foot. Dove has already returned to South Africa from Chiefs’ pre-season camp in Turkey, where the squad is being assessed by their new coach, Nasreddine Nabi, appointed last week.

Chiefs signed Sam after Sifiso Hlanti’s contract expired at the end of last season. However, Sam was injured before the club formally announced his signing, despite traveling with the team to Turkey for their pre-season tour. Due to the unconfirmed signing, Chiefs cannot officially comment on Sam’s injury.

Sam has been without a club since leaving Moroka Swallows in December. His last appearance came against Royal AM in December of last year at Harry Gwala Stadium.

With both Dove and Sam potentially sidelined for some time, Happy Mashiane remains the only recognized left-back at Chiefs. Mashiane saw limited playing time last season.
