DDC Wrap: Chiefs Move Top, Pirates Woes Continue

Kaizer Chiefs moved to the summit of the Dstv Diski Challenge following a resounding 4-1 win over Bernard Parker’s TS Galaxy with in-form Naledi Hlongwane netting a brace at Dobsonville Stadium over the weekend.

Amakhosi have accumulated 30 points with a game in hand over defending champions Stellenbosch FC, who were victims of a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Stellies dropped down to third place with 29 points, while Matsatsantsa climbed up to fourth place on the log standings after making it three wins on the bounce. Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns strengthened their title credentials with a 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates to slot into the second spot.

For Joseph Makhanya’s Buccaneers, the defeat to Downs means they have now suffered back-to-back losses with a three-game winless run, and they remain stagnant with 19 points on the reserve league standings in eighth position.

In the middle of the pack, Cape Town City moved within touching distance of the title race after securing a hard-fought 3-2 win over AmaZulu at Malta Park Sports Complex on Sunday to move up to fifth place with 26 points bagged.

Richards Bay maintained their seventh-place standing as they claimed a slender victory on the road thanks to a solitary goal from Asimbonge Mdunge against Sekhukhune United at Isak Steyl Stadium.

The KZN-based outfit is unbeaten in their last four matches with 22 points collected.

The spoils were shared as Polokwane City and Chippa United played out to a goalless draw at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium as Rise and Shine remain in 12th place, with the latter dropping down to the danger zone in 14th place with six points.

Golden Arrows slightly steered away from the relegation zone to 13th place with eight points following an important 2-1 away victory in the bottom-of-the-table affair against last-placed Marumo Gallants at CUT Stadium.

Newly Promoted Magesi FC were not in action this weekend as their opponents, Royal AM have been unable to field a Diski team this season due shortage of players related to their FIFA-imposed transfer ban. This will give Magesi ample time to prepare for the looming Limpopo derby against Sekhukhune.
