De Jong’s Brace Secures Stellies Important CAF Victory

De Jong’s Brace Andre De Jong helped Stellenbosch to win their second match in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup against the Angolan giant CD Lunda Sul at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday.

Both De Jong’s goals came in the second half after failing to score in the first half. De Jong scored his two goals before 70 minutes as his side came to the second half very strong.

The home side should have scored many goals in the first half, as they got so many chances but failed to convert them. Stellenbosch failed to even have at least one shot at goal as their shots went wide, and some of them deflected to the defenders of the opponent.

The 2023/24 champions of the Carling Knockout continued with their dominance in the second half, trying to score goals to secure a victory. Luckily, Steve Barker’s side found two goals with De Jong’s brace. The first goal was assisted by the Ivorian defender, Ismael Toure in the 50th minute.

15 minutes later, José Garcia fouled Chumani Butsaka in the 18 area box and the referee gave Stellies a Penalty, De Jong made no mistake as he scored a great penalty to make it 2-0.

This win sends Stellies second in Group B, while Lunda still stays at the bottom of the table with only one point after four games. If Stade Malien can beat the log leaders RS Berkane this evening, Stellenbosch will return to third place.
