Dobson Clarifies Willemse’s Tactical Shift Ahead Of Connacht Clash

DHL Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson has shed light on the future of two-time World Cup winner Damian Willemse as the Cape side prepares to host Connacht at DHL Stadium this Saturday.

Despite Willemse’s “Man of the Match” performance at center against the Vodacom Bulls in March, Dobson has deployed the utility back on the wing in recent outings against Edinburgh and Toulon. While the move raised eyebrows, Dobson insists the shift is a calculated, short-term tactical play.

“We won’t keep him there forever,” Dobson noted.

Statistically, the Stormers are recognised as the most kick-heavy team in the competition, but their approach is not without purpose. Retaining possession from high balls has become a key pillar of their game plan.

“Yeah, it’s two different roles. He has been incredibly effective at the moment around the contestables, where we are making massive progress. We’re number one on regaining our own kicks,” said Dobson.

While acknowledging that Willemse’s stint on the wing is not a long-term strategy, Dobson emphasised that it has been a necessary adjustment to gain a tactical edge against specific opponents.

“We knew we had to win the contestable battle against Edinburgh – a massive contestable team. It was our attacking plan against Toulon, and it worked. With what has happened over the weekend, we are probably a day behind with finalising the team for Connacht,” he added.

Earlier in his career, Willemse was tested at flyhalf, but in recent years he has flourished at fullback and centre – positions where he has consistently excelled at the international level.

He played a pivotal role in midfield during the Springboks’ emphatic record victory over the All Blacks in Wellington last year, running riot against a defence that struggled to contain him.

“That is not where his long-term international career is. He has another week or two in him, depending on what we decide for this weekend, that could be an option,” added Dobson.

“It’s not a long-term career move for him. He’ll move to either 15 or 12, if not this week, over the next couple of weeks.”

While some claim that playing him at wing stifles his creative impetus, there has been a method behind Dobson’s madness. With that said, a move to his more creative role will leave fans on the edge of their seats.
