Dove: We Have Failed This Club

Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove feels the team has let the club down as they struggle to secure a top-eight finish in the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership season.

Chiefs currently occupy ninth position with 31 points from 27 games. While the “Glamour Boys” have been inconsistent in their pursuit of a top-eight spot, they still have a chance to achieve it with one game remaining this season.

Despite a challenging season, Amakhosi did manage to end their decade-long trophy drought by defeating Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final.

Considering the pressure to secure a top-eight spot and their inconsistent play throughout the season, Dove believes the players have failed to deliver for the club.

“I think I’ve said this before, this is one of the biggest teams in Africa, and when you come here, you come here to win titles, not to build or not to find yourself in positions where we find ourselves now,” Dove stated.

“So, from my particular opinion, I think at some point we have failed the club because we failed to deliver, but that’s why we’re given chances to fight each opportunity we have.”

“At this point, we can’t dwell on the past, we have to look forward and see what’s ahead of us. Yes, we could have had a better season, we could have done better, you know, that is the sentiment amongst the group, but I think now we just want to focus on what we can do at the moment and that’s qualifying for the top eight,” he added.

Dove reiterated that he joined Amakhosi with the ambition of winning titles, and the current lack of success feels like a personal failure.

“Obviously, that’s what I say. I think when I came here, my mind was clear. I came here to do big things, to win titles, to improve also not only as a player but as a human being. So I said, it’s a feeling of failure because at the end I can say it goes somewhere, but it’s not what I projected. We can only get ahead and keep going,” said Dove.

The Chiefs’ final match against Polokwane City at FNB Stadium on Saturday will determine whether they wish to finish in the top eight or not.
