Erasmus In Line For Record-Breaking Fifth Nedbank Title In His Career

Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus has a chance to etch his name further into Nedbank Cup history on Saturday (15:00) when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the final at Mbombela Stadium.

Despite limited playing time this season, Erasmus boasts a remarkable Nedbank Cup record, having reached five finals previously. He’s emerged victorious in four of those, lifting the trophy with three different clubs.

Erasmus’ first Nedbank Cup triumph came under coach Gavin Hunt with SuperSport United in the 2011/12 season. They defeated Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium, with Erasmus scoring the second goal in a 2-0 victory. In the following season, Hunt and Erasmus fell short against Kaizer Chiefs in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

There was a redempition in the 2013/14 season as another Nedbank Cup final appearance for Erasmus, this time with Pirates in his first stint at the club. Remarkably, it was his third consecutive final and the third for coach Hunt, who was now managing Bidvest Wits. Erasmus stole the show, earning Man of the Match honors and scoring a goal as Pirates defeated Wits 3-1.

Fast forward to the 2021/22 season, and Erasmus added another Nedbank Cup title to his collection with Sundowns. They completed a treble that year, defeating Marumo Gallants in the final at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Upon returning to Pirates before last season’s transfer window closed, Erasmus played a role in their Nedbank Cup victory over Sekhukhune United at Loftus Stadium in May.

A win on Saturday would solidify Erasmus’ place as the most successful player in the competition’s history with five titles. It would also see Orlando Pirates level Mamelodi Sundowns with four Nedbank Cup titles since the commercial bank sponsorship began in 2008. Currently, Pirates sit on three titles, alongside Erasmus’ former club, SuperSport United.
