Former Pirates Defender Leaves Al-Ettihad To Return To Mzansi

Sportswire has learnt that former Orlando Pirates defender Kwanda Mngonyama has parted ways with Bahraini second-tier side Al-Ettihad Club following the expiry of his contract after a one-season stint with the club.
The 32-year-old joined Al-Ettihad in 2025 on a free transfer after leaving AmaZulu, signing a one-year deal.
Prior to his move to Bahrain, Mngonyama spent three months without a club and represented Bafana Bafana at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Uganda as a free agent.
His performances during the tournament attracted the attention of Al-Ettihad, who subsequently moved to secure his services.
With his contract now at an end, Al-Ettihad were keen to retain him and offered him a new deal. Several clubs from Bahrain’s top flight also expressed interest in signing the experienced defender.
However, Mngonyama has opted to return to South Africa, citing a desire to be closer to his family and to conclude his playing career in his home country.
At this stage, no South African club has formally expressed interest in signing the former AmaZulu defender. Nevertheless, his representative is expected to consider any offers that may emerge as the veteran centre-back searches for his next destination.
