Former Pirates Midfielder Being Assess By Gallants

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Xola Mlambo is undergoing assessment at Marumo Gallants.
Released by TS Galaxy at the end of the 2022/23 season following a dispute with coach Sead Ramovic and club chairman Tim Sukazi (his former agent), the 33-year-old spent the entire last campaign without a club. He now seeks to revive his career with Gallants, who have returned to the PSL top flight after acquiring the Moroka Swallows franchise.
A potential move to Gallants would reunite Mlambo with coach Dan Malesela, with whom he previously worked at Mamelodi Sundowns’ development, Cape Town All Stars in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, and Chippa United.
It was at Chippa under Malesela’s guidance that Mlambo excelled, contributing to the club’s top six finish in the 2015/16 season, which included a memorable 2-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium. That remains Chippa’s last top-eight finish.
Mlambo’s impressive performances caught the attention of Gavin Hunt, who signed him for Bidvest Wits. During his two seasons with the Clever Boys, he clinched the league title and the MTN8 in his debut campaign (2016/17), followed by a Carling Knockout Cup win the next season. However, his fortunes changed under Hunt, leading to a move to Pirates midway through the 2017/18 season. Released by the Soweto giants at the end of the 2019/20 season, Mlambo joined AmaZulu.
As part of AmaZulu’s ambitious squad under president Sandile Zungu, Mlambo contributed to the team’s second-place finish in the 2020/21 season behind Mamelodi Sundowns. Nevertheless, his tenure ended in 2021/22, and he subsequently joined TS Galaxy.
Meanwhile, the appointment of Malesela, who replaced Dylan Kerr just 28 days after he was appointed, has seen former Baroka FC coaches of last season now coaching together at Gallants, as Malesela will be assisted by history maker Stan Nkoane.
