Former Pirates Midfielder Joins Wolves

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Marshall Munetsi joined English Premier League side Wolves from French club Reims on Deadline Day.

Munetsi signed a three-and-a-half-year deal, which includes a 12-month option for an extension.

He joins Wolves after playing 159 games for Reims, 67 of which were alongside fellow Wolves January signing, Emmanuel Agbadou.

The 28-year-old, who can play in several midfield roles, moved to Europe from Pirates in 2019 and became a regular starter in Ligue 1 with Reims over the past three-and-a-half seasons.

“I’m delighted. It’s a dream come true for me,” said Munetsi.

“I’ve always wanted to be part of something big, and being part of Wolves is something that is very big for me, and is big for my family.

“It’s a team that I’ve also seen from afar, and the Premier League is the best place to be, so I’m delighted to join the family, to join the team.

“I’m very excited. It’s probably going to be the first time I’ve had a big opportunity to be representing a bigger club. Nothing against Reims, but now you’re going to be playing in the Premier League, playing for Wolves.

“Also, since we have a greater population of Zimbabweans in England, I think I will feel even more at home than I did in France.”

Munetsi, who Pirates signed from Ubuntu Cape Town and loaned to Baroka FC, spent two seasons with the Soweto Giants from 2017 to 2019. During that time, Pirates twice finished second in the league to Mamelodi Sundowns.

He will be remembered for being sent off in the 40th minute of Pirates’ Telkom Knockout final loss to Baroka at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Pirates played with ten men for 80 minutes and ultimately lost 3-2 on penalties after the match finished 2-2 after extra time.
