Frosler On Trophy Drought, Expiring Contract

Kaizer Chiefs defender Reeve Frosler has weighed in on the club’s decade-approaching trophy drought and his contractual situation, with his current deal at Naturena set to run until the end of the ongoing campaign.

The Soweto giants are on the verge of going 10 years without lifting any major silverware since they last won the league title in fine style back in the 2014/15 season – an unthinkable reality for a team that once dominated South African football.

Since winning their last trophy, Amakhosi lost the MTN8 final to Ajax Cape Town and the Telkom Knockout title to Mamelodi Sundowns during the 2015/16 term. This was followed by an upset in the Nedbank Cup by then-second-tier side TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup final in the 2018/19 season and a drubbing at the hands of Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League in the 2020/21 season.

Frosler, who joined the Soweto giants in January 2019 from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits, has made an honest admission about the effects of not being able to win trophies. However, the defender is confident that the team can change their fortunes.

“Obviously it’s not nice not winning a trophy but it’s been a difficult time for the club, and I think most teams go through difficult times and once things get going for them, they pick up again,” said the Wits academy graduate.

“So, just the past four or five years that I’ve been here haven’t been the best in terms of trophies, but we can always get better from where we are right now and hopefully, we are on an upward spiral and things get better from here onwards.

“I know the results have been up and down and it’s been difficult to accept that as a player, but I think we can see that there are improvements. If we can just fix the smaller things, if we can focus a little bit better – things will get better.

“I suggest let’s focus on those small things and hopefully we don’t concede silly goals, a lapse of concentration. We are playing a lot more attacking football; we want to be on the front foot which means we will leave some spaces open, and we have to focus on closing those spaces and who knows maybe we might get more positive results.”

While he is determined to help the Glamour Boys restore their glory days, the 27-year-old is facing an uncertain future as he is into the last six months of his contract. The defender insists that he is only focused on giving his best performances to the team.

“I just continue to try and do my best. I have the next few months to just stay fully focused, continue doing my job at the club and we all have to do our jobs to try and get the best possible results for the team and us as the club,” Frosler added.

“I pray that I have a good next six months and that the team achieves everything that it needs to achieve and that we achieve it as a unity.”

Nasreddine Nabi’s charges will be back in Betway Premiership action with a clash against in-form Sekhukhune United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday and Frosler will be looking to add to his 12 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
