History Made In Durban: KZN Becomes First Province To Launch Elite Netball Super League

The KZN Netball Super League has officially taken center stage. Launched with flair in the presence of dignitaries, stakeholders, and sponsors, the event marked the beginning of a transformative chapter for netball in KwaZulu-Natal.

A Pioneering Vision

KZN Netball President Mrs. Gugu Ngema emphasized the province’s role as a trailblazer in South African sport.

“We are the first province to introduce the Super League,” Ngema stated. “We are intentional about building strong relationships with other provinces, including Mpumalanga and Gauteng, to grow the game even further.”

Strategic Municipal Support

The launch highlighted the critical “Triple-Threat” partnership between the federation, provincial government, and municipalities.

  • City of eThekwini: Dr. Simphiwe Ndlovu, Director of Recreation and Parks, affirmed the city’s readiness. “We have both the capacity and the commitment to deliver tournaments of this magnitude. Our mandate is firmly rooted in creating an enabling environment for athletes to reach their full potential.”
  • City of uMhlathuze: Mr. Cosmos Hlatshwayo reaffirmed a year-round dedication to the sport. “This partnership speaks to our commitment to nurturing netball within our communities throughout the calendar year.”
  • Provincial Government: Acting Chief Director for Sport and Recreation, Mr. Manqoba Bhengu, reinforced that the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture remains “fully committed” to the code’s community impact.

42 Teams, One Goal

The 2026 season features an impressive lineup of 42 teams, uniquely showcasing both female and male talent—a move that further cements KZN’s inclusive approach to the sport.

The action officially begins tomorrow, Saturday, 11 April, at Hoy Park. Expect a vibrant display of talent and provincial pride as the first whistles blow.
