Iconic Moses Mabhida Undergoes Refurbishment

Following recent concerns about the stadium’s condition, Moses Mabhida Stadium management has confirmed a refurbishment project is underway.
The 2010 World Cup venue has experienced issues like water leaks during rain, requiring unsightly bins to collect the water. Additionally, malfunctioning elevators, particularly those serving the media section on level five, have caused inconvenience.
Furthermore, rust on the upper structure and the inoperable SkyCar ride, a revenue stream through bungee jumping, have highlighted the need for maintenance.
Despite these issues, Moses Mabhida Stadium remains a popular venue, generating R53.2 million in revenue last year from hosting 152 events, including political rallies, cup finals, and music concerts.
“The refurbishment is part of a routine maintenance program to ensure the stadium remains world-class and maintains its reputation as one of South Africa’s premier sporting facilities,” explains the eThekwini Municipality’s Communication Unit.
They emphasize the stadium’s structural soundness and continued popularity for various events. They also point out that the recent Nedbank Cup quarter-finals successfully hosted over 50,000 spectators.
“A facility of this size and design requires ongoing upgrades and rehabilitation to stay relevant, attractive, and compliant with safety regulations,” says Dr. Vusi Mazibuko, Head of eThekwini Stadia. “The refurbishment will address the socio-economic needs of the community, promote social cohesion, and generate revenue.”
The project will focus on critical areas like concrete repair, roof maintenance, and addressing corrosion on the architectural facade. Additionally, upgrades are planned for the roof structure and viewing platform to accommodate the future SkyCar ride. Essential infrastructure like floodlights and the audio system will also be addressed to comply with safety regulations.
The refurbishment program covers the 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years. Despite the ongoing work, the stadium will remain operational, with AmaZulu hosting Chippa United this Saturday (15:00).
