Injury Forces Springbok And Bulls Icon Into Immediate Retirement

Springbok and Vodacom Bulls centre Jan Serfontein has announced his retirement, bringing an end to a distinguished first-class career spanning 15 years.

The midfielder had been considering the decision for some time and ultimately confirmed it after consulting with his family and coach.

“Every player knows there comes a time to call it a day,” reflected the 33-year-old.

He added that playing for the Vodacom Bulls had been a dream come true.

“We used to drive up from Port Elizabeth to watch Currie Cup finals, and also the year [2009] they won the Super Rugby final against the Chiefs. I’ve been a fan since I was a youngster. There have been many highs and lows, and I’m incredibly proud and fortunate to have represented the Vodacom Bulls.”

Serfontein’s rise was meteoric. Born in the Eastern Cape in 1993, he first gained widespread recognition in 2012 when he helped the Junior Springboks win the Junior World Championship on home soil. His dominant performances earned him the prestigious World Rugby Junior Player of the Year award, marking him as a future Springbok star.

He transitioned seamlessly into the senior ranks, making his Springbok debut at just 20 years old against Italy in 2013. Over the next four years, he became a regular in the national setup, earning 35 caps and representing South Africa at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, where the team secured a bronze medal.

At domestic level, he established himself as a powerful and skilful presence for the Vodacom Bulls between 2012 and 2017 before pursuing a new challenge in Europe.

Vodacom Bulls chief executive Edgar Rathbone paid tribute to Serfontein’s contribution:

“Jan has been the epitome of a true professional and a ‘Loftus man’ through and through. From the moment he arrived as a world-class junior talent to his return as a seasoned leader, his contribution to this jersey has been immense.

“While his final season was unfortunately cut short by injury, his impact on the team culture and his mentorship of younger players remained invaluable. We wish Jan and his family all the best for this next chapter—he will always have a home at Loftus Versfeld.”

Coach Johan Ackermann also praised Serfontein’s professionalism and character.

“I must congratulate him on a career at the highest level, always putting his body on the line. Although I didn’t have long to coach Jan at the Vodacom Bulls, he struck me as a quality person and a true team player. He was always humble and supportive.

“When he spoke to me, I fully supported his decision. You can make plans, but there is often an inner voice guiding you—you need to be at peace. The person is more important than rugby. I thank him for the way he conducted himself every day, and I wish him and his family well in this next chapter.”

In 2017, Serfontein joined Montpellier, where he spent eight seasons. During his time in France, he developed into a senior leader, making more than 140 appearances and helping the club achieve major success. His stint included winning the European Challenge Cup in 2021 and the French Top 14 title in 2022.

In 2025, Serfontein made a highly anticipated return to Loftus Versfeld, but his homecoming season was disrupted by a significant knee (MCL) injury sustained in April.
