Kopo: We Have Done Well

While traditionally battling relegation late in the season, Chippa United co-coach Kwanele Kopo believes he and Thabo September have made significant progress since taking charge in January.

Appointed after Morgan Mammila’s struggles, Kopo and September have steered Chippa to a respectable ninth place with 32 points after 25 matches.

“For a team that has always survived relegation on the 30th game of the season, I think we have really achieved positively,” stated Kopo .

“We must not hit ourselves too hard with this loss (against AmaZulu this past weekend). It does happen and hopefully, it becomes a refresher in our minds, both the staff and the players, that there is work to be done.”

Chippa fell short against AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. Despite a valiant effort, a red card for captain Roscoe Pietersen and a late goal by Hendrick Ekstein sealed their fate.

This loss snapped a four-game winning streak, including a surprise victory over Kaizer Chiefs. However, Kopo remains optimistic: “I think we have done well; we can’t take this loss and say all things are bad at Chippa,” he affirmed.

“Nobody expected us to have four consecutive wins.”

Kopo highlighted their initial goal:

“When I first came with coach Thabo, the objective we were given was to lift the club off relegation,” he disclosed.

“Then our target was to get off the 30 points mark against SuperSport United, and we achieved that.

“Having said that, the priority for us is to collect points against Swallows,” he asserted, highlighting the team’s relentless pursuit of success.

As Chippa’s journey this season showcases their resilience, they will learn from their defeat and focus on future victories, starting with hosting Swallows at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday. This crucial match precedes their much-anticipated Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against Orlando Pirates at the same venue this coming weekend.
