Zwane Stays Grounded Amid Growing Transfer Hype

Golden Arrows star midfielder Nhlanhla Zwane insists he is tuning out the growing social media praise and transfer speculation surrounding his breakout performances this season.

Zwane, who was born in Koster in the North West to a Tswana mother and Zulu father, has turned heads with a series of commanding displays for Abafana Bes’Thende.

The 26-year-old’s form has sparked intense debate over whether he could be the next high-profile departure from the Durban side to join one of South Africa’s ‘Big Three’, following Siyanda Ndlovu’s off-season transfer to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Known for his dynamic ball-carrying ability, Zwane excels at driving from deep in his own half into attacking channels to carve out chances—even though he is yet to register a goal or an assist this term.

Speaking during the Arrows media day ahead of Saturday’s Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 clash against Chippa United at King Zwelithini Stadium, Zwane revealed why he remains unfazed by the noise.

“One thing about me is that I am not someone who focuses on social media,” Zwane explained. “It only brings outside pressure, so I don’t focus on it. I focus on what I see right here.”

The midfielder attributes his elevated performance levels to the fierce internal competition within Pitso Dladla’s squad.

“The competition in our team is very high and strong. I believe we have a solid squad. To be playing at this level, I credit the guys because they sharpened me, forced me to pull up my socks, and pushed me to keep working hard.”

Zwane models his energetic style of play on former Liverpool and Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum—who recently played alongside South African winger Mohau Nkota at Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq.

Like Wijnaldum, Zwane displays immense composure when breaking lines and driving forward in possession.

“One of my favorite players—who I don’t think many people rated as highly as I did—was Georginio Wijnaldum,” Zwane added. “He was underrated, but a top player. I base my game around him.”

Wijnaldum famously etched his name into European football folklore after coming off the bench to score twice in Liverpool’s historic 4-0 UEFA Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona at Anfield.

Zwane, who has scored once in 70 appearances for Golden Arrows, remains ambitious despite the club’s current five-match winless streak across all competitions, boldly stating his target to challenge for silverware this season.
