Kopo: Why I Chose AmaTuks Despite PSL Interest

University of Pretoria coach Kwanele Kopo confirmed he received multiple offers from both Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship clubs, but he always knew where he wanted to go.

Kopo, who has taken over from Tlisane Motaung, will lead the Motsepe Championship side for the upcoming 2025/26 season.

He revealed that offers from various teams flooded in after his decision to join AmaTuks became known.

His decision to join AmaTuks quickly led to a surge of offers from other top-tier and first-division teams.
“It was a difficult process,” said Kopo.

“The process that was easy in the beginning, but I don’t know if the other teams got a sniff that I could be coming across to this side, and I was suddenly flooded with offers from PSL and other NFD teams, and that’s what made the process very, very difficult. But I think at the back of my mind, I always knew what I wanted to do.”

The 49-year-old, who left Chippa United in January, has also complimented his assistant, Machete Moloto, who also joined the team with him, noting that he is experienced and would add value to the team to the team.

“We’ve known each other, we’ve been on the opposite sides, shouting at each other a few years back. We’ve had some heated arguments now and then, but it has always been in the spirit of football, a spirit of development, a passion to want to win, so it will be one of the assistant coaches that I’ll be working with,” he said.

“The other one is coach Moloto. We’ve just stolen him, if I may say, from Marumo Gallants. He’s previous job, he was the head coach of the DDC team at Marumo Gallants. But a very, very experienced coach.

“He’s worked with Polokwane City and a lot of players that you see coming out of Polokwane City, Rodney Maphangule, Mokibelo Ramabu, a lot more players that have really come through that program. He’s been responsible for that program. He’s worked at the National First Division with Polokwane City. He’s worked as an assistant coach in the PSL also for Polokwane City.

“So I was saying to the CEO when we were discussing the possibilities of an assistant coach, and I said that the person that I’m bringing along it’s not a favour, it’s somebody that is experienced in the game and it’s somebody that I believe will add value to the program.”

He continued: “We’re excited to be joining the family, and I think our experience, coming from outside myself and coach Moloto, we’re very passionate and very committed to give ourselves not only to the Motsepe Championship Foundation team but across the board.”

Furthermore, Kopo emphasized that they intend to build a team that will be competitive in the Motsepe league with the overall goal of playing in the Betway Premiership.
“The aim is to build a team that is going to be competitive in the Motsepe and the ultimate goal is to go play the Betway Premiership,” said Kopo.
