Leaner Inspired By Legend Khune

Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner has revealed that from a young age, he has always looked up to the legendary goalkeeper of Kaizer Chiefs, Itumeleng Khune.

Khune was known for his exceptional ball distribution during his playing days, a quality that became his trademark in South African football and earned him global recognition.

Leaner is currently in form and performing best in his club. He has also played a key role in helping the club maintain its spot in the top five of the Betway Premiership.

When asked which goalkeeper he looks up to locally, Leaner responded, “Itumeleng Khune.”

“He was just something else: distribution, flexibility, longevity. From a young age, Itumeleng Khune inspired me growing up.”

The 28-year-old goalkeeper has likely caught the attention of Hugo Broos, having been included in the preliminary squad for the last Africa Cup of Nations. He was also called up for the June international friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique.

With only a few months left until the World Cup, Leaner will have to work very hard to impress Broos and secure a place in the final squad. The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Meanwhile, Bafana will host Panama in two international friendly matches to be played between March 27 and 31.

Leaner opened up about his national team ambitions, saying that if he gets a Bafana Bafana call-up, he’ll make use of that opportunity.

“I can take you back. When I got my first call-up, I wanted to cry. It was like a dream come true. Taking it back, I never thought I would play for the national team, to be honest. I never thought I had the talent. Once I got the opportunity, I tasted it so I wanted more,” Leaner stated.

“So now I know out there someone is watching. The people select me. I’ve been in the preliminary squad many times but never made the final squad. All I can do is work hard and play hard, and maybe get a spot. Maybe if I get a spot, I will try to keep on and go through the World Cup,” Leaner added.
