Liverpool Agree Deal To Sign Former Sundowns Defender

Liverpool Futbol Club has reached an agreement with Argentine outfit CA Talleres for the loan deal of former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Lucas Suarez.

The 30-year-old center-back left the Tshwane giants at the end of last season as he failed to impress during his six-month loan spell, prompting the club to opt against activating the buy option included in the deal.

Suarez made 14 appearances across all competitions for Sundowns and scored a solitary goal. While he impressed in his early days, he made a costly error against Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semi-final – a moment that initiated his downfall at Downs.

As a result, the player was left out of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup squad, where Miguel Cardoso’s men crashed out of the group stages. Despite a disappointing loan stint, Suarez won the Betway Premiership title and finished as a runner-up in the CAF Champions League.

Upon returning to his parent club, Suarez was subject to transfer speculation and interest, as Rosario Central and Club Atlético Platense were said to have acquired the player’s services.

However, those deals didn’t materialize. Now, the ex-Sundowns defender is set to join the 2023 Uruguayan Primera Division champions

Liverpool on a season-long loan, with an option to buy. Suarez will share a dressing room with former Uruguay national team striker Abel Hernandez, who scored 11 goals in 29 caps.

While Suarez is set for a fresh start in South America, his compatriot, Matias Esquivel, will be determined to fight for his place in the star-studded Sundowns team as he has seen little game time and a loan spell since joining the club in January 2024.

Esquivel arrived as a marquee signing on a reported deal worth in the region of € 2.30 million (approximately R 47 million). The Avellaneda native made 16 appearances across all competitions, with two goals scored and one assist provided.
