Mailula Makes Loan Move To Belgian Giants

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula has joined Belgian First Division B side KV Kortrijk on loan for the rest of the season, with an option to purchase.

The 24-year-old striker’s latest move comes after a successful stint with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, where he played under the guidance of Rulani Mokwena last season.

Mailula’s journey to Kortrijk began after his impressive season with Sundowns in 2022/23, where he scored 15 goals and assisted four in 31 games across all competitions.

His standout performance earned him the PSL Young Player of the Season award, catching the attention of Major League Soccer side Toronto.

Although his time with Toronto was brief, Mailula made an impact in the United States, scoring two goals and assisting one in just eight games.

In the 2024/25 season, Toronto loaned him to Wydad, where he reunited with Mokwena.

Under his former coach, Mailula played 36 games, netting six goals and providing seven assists. He even showcased his skills on the global stage, scoring one goal in the FIFA Club World Cup held in the United States.

Mailula expressed gratitude to Toronto for facilitating the deal, saying, “I want to take this moment to thank Toronto for making this deal happen. I also want to thank my management and family for everything.”

He added, “I think I’m looking forward to meeting the new guys at Kortrijk, and I’m excited about that, to start this new journey with Kortrijk.”

Kortrijk, currently topping the Belgian First Division B log with 12 points from four games, is unbeaten this season. They are the former club of Darren Keet.

Mailula will be eager to make his debut this weekend, pending his work permit, as his team takes on Jong Kenk at De Leunen on Saturday.
