Makgopa Praised After Return To Starting XI
Orlando Pirates coach Abdelsam Ouaddou has praised the performance of striker Evidence Makgopa following his return to the starting lineup against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Makgopa’s mysterious absence from previous matches had baffled fans, but Ouaddou explained he was assessing other players, given the club signed 15 new players during the off-season.
Makgopa had seen little action under Ouaddou, who replaced the popular José Riveiro. The team had lost both of its opening league matches before this crucial fixture. However, for the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, Makgopa was restored to the lineup alongside senior players Thalente Mbatha and Deano van Rooyen, who were also previously left out in previous matches.
A Disappointing Draw Despite Strong Performance
With these players back in the squad, Pirates were unlucky not to win the game. They hit the post and peppered Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with shots.
Makgopa, in particular, was a constant threat, harassing the Sundowns defense with his pressing and making it difficult for them to play out from the back. His work rattled defenders Grant Kekana and Keanu Cupido, leaving many Pirates supporters questioning why the forward had been omitted in the first place.
“Makgopa had a great performance,” Ouaddou said. “I was very happy with what I saw, as I was with all his teammates. They showed great character.”
Seema Impresses in Defense
Another standout player was defender Lebone Seema, who was signed from TS Galaxy. Partnering with captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Seema demonstrated qualities that suggest he could become a top defender with time. He was comfortable bringing the ball out from the back, and his performance ensured Pirates didn’t miss the injured captain Nkosinathi Sibisi.
“About Seema, he played in the previous game,” Ouaddou noted.
“If the club brought him here, it means they saw something good in him. As you know, he is still young, doing good things. But we need to help him improve and bring him to a higher level, to be a top, top player for modern football.”
The second leg of the MTN8 semi-final will take place next weekend at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
